Centenary Athletics: Weekend Preview - Jan. 17-20

The men's and women's basketball teams host conference doubleheaders on Friday (Southwestern University) and Sunday (Texas Lutheran University), the men's and women's swimming teams face Millsaps College on Friday at 4 PM and Austin College & the University of St. Thomas on Saturday at 1 PM, and finally the Ladies' gymnastics team is home on Monday at 1 PM for a tri-meet against SEMO and Westchester in the Gold Dome.
MEN'S BASKETBALL UPDATE:
The Gents (5-8, 3-1 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) won their second game in a row and improved to 4-5 at home with an 81-73 over Austin College on Tuesday evening at the Gold Dome. Centenary led 38-29 at halftime and was edged 44-43 in the second half, but shot 42.9 % overall for the game and an impressive 20-26 at the free-throw line to help seal the win over the 'Roos (6-7, 1-3 SCAC).
Centenary the Pirates of Southwestern on Friday at 7:30 PM and the TLU Bulldogs on Sunday at 2 PM.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL UPDATE:
The Ladies (2-10, 1-3 SCAC) lost 75-48 at home on Tuesday evening to Austin College (7-5, 3-1 SCAC) in a league contest inside the Gold Dome. Centenary fell behind 41-20 at halftime as the 'Roos cruised to the road victory. The Ladies will face Southwestern on Friday at 5:30 PM and TLU on Sunday at Noon.
Freshman F Shyanne Phillips (Leesville, La.) was named to the D3hoops.com Team of the Week for the week of January 12th, it was announced Tuesday by D3hoops.com. Phillips exploded for a career-high 26 points to lead all scorers in the Ladies' 74-61 win over Dallas at home on Jan. 12 and added a game-high 19 rebounds for an impressive double-double and her 19 rebounds are tied for the most by a SCAC player in a game this season and tied for the seventh-most in a single game in Ladies' program history. She was 11-17 from the floor and 4-4 at the free-throw line in 30 minutes with a blocked shot and a steal. Phillips is the conference's third-leading rebounder, sixth in free-throw %, and ranked in the top 20 in scoring. She has now reached double figures six times this season and has recorded four double-doubles.
The Team of the Week is D3hoops.com's weekly honor roll, in its 28th season of recognizing the top performance at each of the five positions from the previous week. Players are selected from nominations from their school's sports information directors.
GYMNASTICS:
The Ladies open their season on Jan. 12 with a second-place finish against the host Texas Woman's University Pioneers in Denton, Texas in a Midwest Independent Conference dual meet inside Kitty Magee Arena.
The Ladies earned a team score of 180.375 while the Pioneers won the meet with a score of 194.000. Centenary posted a 46.575 on vault, its best event score of the meet, and finished with a 46.025 on beam, a 44.725 on floor, and a 43.050 on bars.
Senior Sophie Schmitz (Trophy Club, Texas) competed in the All-Around and finished with a 37.550 as her best score of the meet was a 9.60 on bars which earned her an eighth-place finish. Schmitz led the way on beam as she finished sixth with a 9.475. Freshman Peyton Burford (West Monroe, La.) had the Ladies' best finish on vault as she finished seventh in her collegiate debut with a 9.45. Freshman Chloe Gilbert (Pflugerville, Texas) was seventh on beam with 9.40.
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING:
The Centenary men's and women's swimming teams recorded a sweep over the Millsaps College Majors in a dual meet at GRIT Training in Flowood, Miss. on Oct. 26 to cap the fall season.
The men picked up a 171-56 victory while the women earned a 125-81 win. The Maroon and White held its annual Alumni/Intrasquad meet at home on Nov. 9 and gets back to action this weekend with a pair of meets inside the Centenary Fitness center on campus.
Sophomore Hannah Waddell (Shreveport, La.) led the way for the Ladies with three individual wins in the Oct. 26 meet against Millsaps and freshman Hunter Hedges (Murphy, Texas) had three wins to lead the Gents. Freshman Bailey Allemeier (Altus, Okla.) had two individual wins and the Ladies finished with seven total while the Gents tallied nine individual wins. Centenary recorded 16 runner-up finishes combined between the men and women.
Waddell was named the SCAC Co-Women's Swimmer of the Week on Oct. 29 following her impressive performance against the Majors and earned the honor for the second time this season. She was named solo Swimmer of the Week on Oct. 15 after she turned in an impressive opening weekend for the Ladies in a pair of home meets against McMurry as she claimed six individual wins. She won the 400-yard IM (5:04.78), the 200-yard freestyle (2:11.93), the 100-yard breaststroke (1:13.68), the 500-yard freestyle (5:49.82), the 200-yard breaststroke (2:34.32), and the 200-yard IM (2:21.55).
Centenary will finish the season next month in the annual SCAC Championships meet set for Feb. 12-15 in Garland, Texas.
Admission is FREE to all athletic events this weekend.
